FEMA flood map coverage and map dates, state by state
Before you send addresses from a state, see how much of it FEMA has mapped digitally and how old those maps are. Computed from FEMA's National Flood Hazard Layer on September 29, 2026.
183,679FIRM panels in the NFHL
2,624digital flood map databases (DFIRMs)
2,668 / 3,221counties with at least one digital FIRM
70%of panels took effect before September 29, 2016
What these numbers mean for your lookups
- A point in a county with no digital FIRM comes back
"mapped": false. The county may have paper maps, or none. Each state page lists those counties. - A county with only community-numbered maps (a six-digit DFIRM ID) can still return unmapped points outside those communities. In Hawaii and a few other places a community-numbered map covers the whole county.
firm_panel.effective_dateis when the map at that point took effect. An old date is not an error; it is how current FEMA's map is there.- Effective Letters of Map Revision (LOMRs) change the map between full revisions. The zone polygons in the NFHL already include them: 9,869 are effective and not yet folded into a new FIRM.
- 591 panels carry a placeholder effective date in FEMA's data (such as 9999-09-09). The API returns
nullfor those dates rather than a year no one can use.

How fresh an answer is
Every lookup queries the NFHL when it is made, so a response reflects FEMA's map as published at source.queried_at. Results are cached for 24 hours per point (source.cached tells you when an answer came from the cache). FEMA adds and revises maps continuously; preliminary maps that have not taken effect are not in the NFHL and are not in our answers.
These coverage pages are recomputed from FEMA's data at least every quarter. The next recompute is due by December 29, 2026.
